.STORM INFORMATION... At 7 PM ChST...the center of Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) was located near latitude 9.0N...longitude 151.3E. This was about 530 miles southeast of Guam. Storm motion was northwest, 325 degrees, at 5 mph, likely signaling the beginning long-awaited slow departure out of Chuuk State. Storm intensity was 90 mph.
.SITUATION OVERVIEW... Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) is slowly moving northwest in Chuuk State, bringing intense showers, thunderstorms, and winds as it continues to consolidate and intensify. TY Sinlaku will continue to move northwest on its journey toward the Marianas. It is too early to provide exact wind and surge forecast values for specific locations in the Marianas, but the general concern should be for the possibility of devastating damage somewhere within the Marianas.
.PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... For those under a watch...now is the time to finalize your preparations according to your typhoon disaster plan specific to your home or business. Items to bring to a shelter include a first aid kit, medicines and prescriptions, baby food and diapers, games and books, toiletries, a battery powered radio, a cell phone, flashlights with extra batteries, a blanket or sleeping bag for each person, personal identification, copies of key papers such as insurance policies, available cash and credit cards. Remember, pets are not allowed in most public shelters, so check ahead with your intended shelter. Regarding your home or business, cover all windows and doors with shutters or plywood. Move patio furniture and other loose objects indoors. Brace all exterior doors, including garage doors. Do this as early as possible. If you need to make a trip to the hardware store, the grocery store, or the gas station, do so as early as possible. Stay calm and keep informed. Comply with any evacuation orders that are issued for your area. If you live in a metal roof or container home, or you live in a surge zone or any location prone to flooding, evacuate to a designated shelter or ride out the storm in the sturdy home of family or friends outside of evacuation zones. && ...WIND INFORMATION... As Typhoon Sinlaku (04W) moves closer, the threat for sustained high winds is likely to increase. The latest forecast is for Tropical storm force winds to begin affecting the Marianas Monday morning. Typhoon force winds will possibly move into Guam and Rota Monday night or early Tuesday morning, with strong tropical storm force winds into Tinian and Saipan early Tuesday morning. Typhoon Sinlaku could potentially near the Marianas as a category 3 or 4 Typhoon. A general concern should be for the possibility of at least extensive damage somewhere within the islands under the Typhoon Watch. ...COASTAL INUNDATION AND SURF INFORMATION... Due to higher astronomical tides next week and pre-existing elevated seas due to non-TC features in the area, hazardous surf is likely to become dangerous across north, east and south reefs in the Marianas as surf builds to 15 feet, and potentially spreading to west facing reefs once TY Sinlaku moves west of the islands. Coastal inundation becoming likely as early as Monday morning so a Coastal Flood Watch is in effect staring Monday morning for significant coastal inundation of 2 feet or more possible. Inland flooding made worse by developing rainbands during storm passage will significantly increase coastal inundation as rain run-off and storm surge interact. Surf will be slow to decrease after Sinlaku's exit to the northwest in the second half of the week, as swells will continue to pummel western Marianas shores. ...OTHER STORM EFFECTS... Heavy, intense rainfall with TY Sinlaku is likely for much of the week, with rainfall amounts upwards of 15 to 20 inches near the center, as the system crosses the Marianas. The exact track of Sinlaku will determine where the heaviest rainfall will set up across the Islands. As such, a Flood Watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.
