SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT National Weather Service ANCHORAGE AK 813 AM AKST Fri Jan 11 2019 ...LOCALIZED AUFEIS FORMING... Aufeis is forming on many local rivers, causing many river stages to rise. Aufeis occurs during periods of of cold weather where river ice production is enhanced. This newly formed ice in the river causes water levels to rise, and can force water overbank. Locations which are susceptible to aufeis flooding include but are not limited to: Ship, Peters, and Rabbit Creeks in the Anchorage area and the Anchor River on the Kenai Peninsula. The possibility of aufeis flooding will continue until the return of more mild temperatures on Sunday.
