DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was located near latitude 13.3 North, longitude 155.2 West. Lowell is moving toward the west near 10 mph (17 km/h). This general motion with a gradual decrease in forward speed is expected during the next few days. Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts. Lowell is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next few days. However, Lowell is expected to remain a major hurricane for the next several days. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km). The minimum central pressure estimated from the NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft data is 933 mb (27.55 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are spreading northward and will affect portions of the Hawaiian Islands during the next several days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
